Bioprospecting for HIV-1 latency reversing agent (prostratin) from indigenous medicinal plants for latency reversal in HIV-1 subtypes A and D in Uganda (HIV-1_AD_LRA study)-PHASE-3
Joseph Francis Hokello
Introduction
HIV/AIDS remains incurable due to viral latency, which rebounds when HAART is discontinued. Latency reversing agents (LRAs) such as prostratin have shown promise in subtype B HIV but have not been tested in subtypes A and D, which dominate in Uganda. Uganda has indigenous medicinal plants from the Euphorbiaceae family that may contain prostratin or analogs. Building on earlier phases, this project advances the herbal prototype PROVIRID to test its efficacy in reversing HIV latency in Ugandan subtypes.
